A New Year, & A Welcome From Our New Chorus President

Congratulations on making it through 2011! We hope the new year is filled with many great things in store!

Barbershop harmony singing has the friendliest group of singers, the world’s largest men’s singing group, and one of the most elite singing organizations in the world. We heartily welcome you to our 13th Colony Sound (Savannah chapter) blog of the Barbershop Harmony Society. This Society was formed by and for men who liked to sing and wanted to get together with a bunch of guys and sing in quartets. Today we’re still basically a bunch of guys who want to sing; however, if you spend more time with us and really get into this hobby, you’ll find that it’s much more than “just a bunch of guys wanting to sing”.

This is about aspects of the 13th Colony Sound. Maybe you’re thinking and expecting that we just be doing a little singing. If so, you may be in for a surprise. “Barbershopping” is much more than just singing. We do shows, singing Valentines, training young and old, charitable works, gigs (we call sing outs), and the like also. Yes, we do have a female chorus in Savannah! We even have a youth chorus. As a member, audience, Valentine recipient, or just a witness to what we do in Savannah, we’ve no doubt that you’ll soon realize that you’ve found the best singing organization in the world. As an added bonus, be assured that anywhere you travel in the United States and in many foreign countries, if there is a barbershop chapter there, you’ll always be welcomed where Barbershop Harmony Society guy's and gals are.

2011 Carolinas District Fall Convention Recap

It's been a while since the Carolinas District's fall convention--it actually happened before this blog's creation--so before more time is allowed to elapse, I figured I'd take the time to let you know how it went for us at 13th Colony Sound.

13th Colony Sound's petition to join the new Carolinas District has been accepted by the powers that be, and, although our membership doesn't officially start until the first of the new year, the Carolinas District welcomed our participation anyway.

Savannah's own barbershop chorus performed in the chorus contest for score and evaluation only--the first time since Chattanooga in 2008. The 11 members present on the risers were all smiles coming off-stage. We're excited to compete again.

This convention was my third experience with barbershop conventions. The first was the first convention of the new Carolinas District, which I had the priviledge of being able to attend. This experience was full of many of the same exciting experiences that one can expect from such an event.

One thing that was different this time was the fact that my hotel room was also the Savannah chapter's hospitality room, so fun could be found where sound sleep could not.

Another thing I enjoyed is the comradery and fraternal atmosphere of barbershop singers. Saturday afternoon, I was relaxing in a hotel room, and I heard the faint sound of singing. I followed my ears and found myself in the Greensboro, NC hospitality room. They encouraged me to eat and sing with them--it was hard to know which to do first! I was instantly treated like one of their own. Later on, after the Show of Champions, I got three of these guys into a quartet with me to sing "Happy Birthday" to my brother-in-law over the phone.

I look forward to the spring-time, not just because it's winter now, but because of the spring convention. I hope that the district has educational classes like they did at the spring convention last year.

Christmas Barbershop Singouts

13th Colony Sound will be singing at a couple of different events during this holiday season. There are two in this upcoming week.

Both events are at 7:00 PM, and both are free to the public, so if you are in the Savannah area, come hear us sing!

2011 Fall Show Recap

Our 13th Colony Sound fall show was a success! Dr. Valentino's suggested love songs did the trick, despite the efforts of the quartet of divorce attorneys at Chatham, Cheatum, Chirpin, Chopin & Associates. It was a night filled with barbershop music and the witty comedy of the show's creator and current chapter president, Robert Kearns.

At the direction of Jeremy Conover, the 13th Colony Sound chorus rang out chords in our unique style of harmony even better than before in a show that warmed the heart of those in attendance.

This show also had an impact on those who participated in its performance. Our newest and youngest member, Henry Wadman, had this to say regarding his involvement in his very first barbershop show:

Although I have been performing for the past few years, performing in my first ever barbershop harmony show was a vastly different experience for me. As opposed to singing solos in theatrical performances, it takes a very different kind of skill to sing in the wonderful harmony displayed through barbershop--a skill that I am striving to achieve. I greatly enjoy singing all the great songs with all the great men in our chorus. One thing I love about 13th Colony Sound is the large generational gap shown in the singers. We have young teenagers (like me), men in their mid-twenties (the guy who got me involved), and everything beyond that, including some fine gentlemen in their 80's. Barbershop is a great and new experience for me. I hope to get involved in more shows, and stick with this art for the rest of my life.

If you were able to attend this show, we trust that you thoroughly enjoyed yourselves there. If you were unable to attend this year, we hope that you'll be able to attend our next show, and become participants in an experience of a barbershop harmony production

STORY SYNOPSIS
After years of clinical research, Dr. Omar Valentino arrives in Savannah to field test a unique theory on marital bliss. His hypothesis: carefully selected music for a bride and groom’s First Dance will seal their relationship and ensure a lifetime of happiness! Conversely, wedding music hastily chosen will in all probability lead only to the enrichment of divorce lawyers.

Word has already spread throughout Savannah and a host of locals arrive for advice from Omar the Musicologist. Those entering second unions learn why a prior marriage was doomed to fail, while other townsfolk – benefitting from dysfunctional relationships - do their best to undermine the musical theorist.

A New Blog for an Old Chapter

Welcome to 13th Colony Sound's official blog! This is the first post of many to come.

13th Colony Sound is the Savannah, GA chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society (SPEBSQSA). We have been upholding the tradition and enjoyment of barbershop harmony singing ever since receiving our charter in 1970. If you're in the Savannah area, come check us out!
